Impact Detection and Reporting
Impact Detection and Reporting
Why Impact Detection Matters for Safety, Maintenance, and Accountability
Railcars experience impacts every day, from rough coupling events and humping to in-transit vibrations and yard handling. While some are minor, others can damage cargo, shift loads, or lead to costly asset wear and repair.
To stay ahead of maintenance needs and protect cargo integrity, you need visibility into when, where, and how hard your railcars are being impacted.
The challenge?
Most impacts go unnoticed or unreported until there’s visible damage, customer complaints, or failures down the line. Without real-time detection and documentation, rail operators and shippers face:
1
Delayed awareness of handling issues
2
Undetected mechanical stress leading to failures
3
Cargo claims without root cause data
4
No ability to identify high-risk yards, lanes, or events
The ZTR Solution
An unexpected impact occurs during a yard coupling operation but no one is there to witness it. Later, the load is found shifted, or the railcar shows signs of stress. Without data, there’s no explanation, no accountability, and no plan to prevent it again.
Pivot uses advanced onboard sensing to detect, timestamp, and report shock events as they happen, delivering the visibility you need to respond quickly and improve long-term reliability.
How it works:
Impact detection is built into the Pivot Gateway. Its onboard accelerometer continuously monitors motion and force. When a significant shock is detected, based on configurable G-force thresholds, it automatically logs:
- Impact intensity
- Timestamp of event
- GPS location
- Railcar ID and movement status
This information is transmitted wirelessly to your operations team without crew intervention or trackside infrastructure.
Why it matters
With Pivot’s automated impact reporting, you can:
- Identify rough handling zones in yards or transit corridors
- Investigate incidents with precise data instead of guesswork
- Prevent recurring damage through targeted process improvements
- Strengthen customer trust by showing proactive monitoring
- Support maintenance planning by tracking cumulative mechanical stress
Whether you manage tank cars, boxcars, or flatcars, real-time impact data helps you protect your assets and the cargo they carry.
Data meets insight
All impact data is stored and visualized in Pivot’s online platform, where you can:
- Filter by date, or location
- View trends across specific railcars or yards
- Export reports to share with customers or maintenance teams
- Combine with other Pivot data like load status or dwell for richer context
The result?
No more blind spots. Just clear, timely data on every impactful moment so you can react faster, maintain smarter, and reduce costly surprises.
Pivot turns shock detection into a proactive tool for rail safety, performance, and accountability.
